This Day in Baseball History: April 20th (95th Anniversary Of Fenway Park Opening)

In 1912, after two postponements due to rain, Fenway Park hosted its first game… the Red Sox post a come-from-behind win over the New York Highlanders, 7-6, in 11 innings in the debut of the game’s oldest ballpark (Wrigley Field).
In 1912, the Tigers played their first game in Tiger Stadium defeating the Indians, 6-5.
In 1916, the Cubs played their first game at Weeghman Park beating the Reds in 11 innings, 7-6… the park would be renamed Wrigley Field in 1926.
In 1939, Red Sox 20-year old rookie Ted Williams strikes out against Red Ruffing of the Yankees in his first major league at bat… he also got his first career hit (a double) in the 2-0 loss to the Yankees.
In 1967, Mets’ rookie hurler Tom Seaver got his first major-league win as New York beat the Cubs, 6-1.
In 1973, Pirate great Roberto Clemente was inducted into the Hall of Fame in a special election only 4 months after his death.
In 1988, the Orioles set a major league record for consecutive losses at the start of a season losing #14 to the Brewers, 8-6.
In 1997, Mark McGwire became the fourth major leaguer to hit a home run over the left field roof at Tiger Stadium (Harmon Killebrew, Frank Howard, and Cecil Fielder).
