Clemens’ Attorney Issues Denial
By Administrator | December 14, 2007
In the aftermath of the issuance of The Mitchell Report yesterday, one of Roger Clemens legal advisors, Attorney Rusty Hardin, denied allegations set forth in the report that The Rocket had used performance-enhancing drugs.
Hardin said: “I have great respect for Senator Mitchell. I think an overall look at this problem in baseball was an excellent idea, but I respectfully suggest it is very unfair to include Roger’s name in this report. He is left with no meaningful way to combat what he strongly contends are totally false allegations. He has not been charged with anything, he will not be charged with anything and yet he is being tried in the court of public opinion with no recourse. That is totally wrong. There has never been one shred of tangible evidence that (Roger) ever used these substances and yet he is being slandered today”.
In his remarks, Hardin called McNamee a “troubled man” and insinuated that the accusations against Clemens might be motivated by self-preservation (to avoid jail time in a related case) or vindictiveness (for having been discharged by Clemens as his personal trainer). Of course, those intimations ignore the fact that perjury would result in McNamee spending more time in jail and that Clemens and his former trainer maintained close ties (McNamee reportedly oversaw construction of a home gym at Clemens’ house earlier this year).
When asked about Clemens’ denials earlier today, Senator Mitchell reiterated that The Rocket had been invited to meet with him and respond to the allegations that were made. Clemens declined. Now he wants to have his cake and eat it too…
