Around Baseball: January 12th — Brewers Sign Cameron; Braves Set To Acquire Kotsay; Cards / Blue Jays On Verge Of Swapping 3rd Basemen
By Administrator | January 13, 2008
According to the Associated Press, the Milwaukee Brewers have reached agreement with center fielder Mike Cameron on a one-year, $7 MM deal for 2008. The newest Brewer will receive a $1.25 million signing bonus and $5 million salary for next season… the Brewers have a $10 million option for 2009 with a $750,000 buyout.
The deal contains a limited no-trade clause and team option for 2009… the deal is contingent on the completion of a physical examination.
Cameron will serve a twenty-five game suspension at the start of next season due to the fact that he violated MLB’s drug-testing program.
He hit .242, with 21 HR and 78 RBI for the San Diego Padres in 2007.
In addition to his base salary, Cameron can earn another $750,000 annually in performance bonuses — for 475 plate appearances in 2008 and / or for 575 plate appearances in 2009.

The Oakland A’s and Atlanta Braves have reached agreement on a deal that will send center fielder Mark Kotsay from the west coast to the east coast as Atlanta fills the outfield hole created by the departure of free agent Andruw Jones.
The deal is contingent on Kotsay passing a physical and the commissioner’s office approving the cash to be exchanged as part of the deal (Oakland will pay all but $2 million of Kotsay’s $7.325 million salary for 2008).
In return for Kotsay, the A’s will receive pitcher Joey Devine.
Kotsay, 32, was limited to 56 games in 2007 after having back surgery… he hit .214, with only fifteen extra-bases hits in 206 at-bats in 2007.
Devine, a 24-year-old right-handed reliever, was a first round pick in 2005. He split most of last season between Mississippi (Double-A, Southern League) and Richmond (Triple-A, International League) where he made 50 appearances… he compiled a 5-4 record, with 20 saves, a 1.89 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He threw 50 innings, allowing only 41 hits while walking 19 and striking out 78 opposing batters. He has pitched 19.2 innings in the major leagues, compiling a 6.86 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays have reached a tentative agreement on a trade that will see the teams swap third baseman… under the terms of the deal, the Cards would send Scott Rolen to the Blue Jays in exchange for Troy Glaus. The deal is contingent upon the two players passing physical exams tomorrow.
According to a source, the Cardinals only agreed to the deal after Glaus agreed to exercise his $11.25 million option for 2009…. St. Louis had Rolen signed for three more years and did not want to lose hime in exchange for only one year of Glaus. Both players were required to waive no-trade clauses.
A source told ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark that Toronto will be responsible for the three years and $33 million left on Rolen’s contract, while St. Louis will assume the $24.5 million owed Glaus through 2009… therefore, since no cash is involved in the trade, no approval will be required from commissioner Bud Selig.
Rolen, 32, is a career .283 hitter and seven-time Gold Glove winner (only Brooks Robinson, with 16, and Mike Schmidt, with 10, have won a Gold Glove Award more often at third base). He was expendable, in large part, because of a well-publicized falling out with manager Tony La Russa.
Glaus, 31, hit .262 with 20 HR and 62 RBI in 115 games (only 385 ABs) in 2007. For his career, he has hit .254 with 277 career homers over 10 seasons.
