Buchholz Struggles In Red Sox Loss; Colon Looks Good In Bullpen Session
By Administrator | March 3, 2008
Clay Buchholz had a rough day at the office yesterday. After Tim Wakefield blanked the Twins for the first two innings, the phenom made his first appearance of the Grapefruit League season… it took him awhile to record his first out. He surrendered a homer to the first batter he faced, Jon Knott. That dinger was followed by an Adam Everett double, a Denard Span single, an RBI-single by Nick Punto RBI single, and a two-RBI double by Michael Cuddyer.
Then, at last, Buchholz settled down. Though he allowed Cuddyer to steal third base, he was able to strand him right there. He retired both Justin Morneau and Jason Kubel, and then after walking Mike Redmond he struck out Brian Buscher to end a l-o-n-g inning.
He set down the Twins in order in the fourth inning.
Afterwards, Buchholz said: “I just told myself I was trying to throw a little bit too hard, I think, in that first inning. When I got back out there, I just tried to let the pitches work instead of trying to make them work”.
He took the loss in the Twins 8-2 win over the Red Sox.

Bartolo Colon threw 42 fastballs and changeups to backup catcher Doug Mirabelli in an 11-minute bullpen session this morning.
Pitching coach John Farrell says the workout made it “a very good day” for the 34-year-old: “For not being on the mound for three-and-a-half weeks, he threw the ball to both sides of the plate and found the glove well. He got through his front side to allow him to really carry the fastball through the zone. I’d say there was a few pitches that approached 90 (mph)”.
Colon initially said he expected to pitch as early as March 9th against the Dodgers… although manager Terry Francona has been encouraged by Colon’s early bullpen sessions, he has said the March 15th game against the Reds is a more likely target.
