Red Sox Sign Several Young Players, Including Papelbon, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Buchholz
By Administrator | March 6, 2008
The Red Sox have now come to terms with all of their unsigned players - without having renewed a single one of them - as they reached agreement with all of their remaining unsigned players today.
One day after closer Jonathan Papelbon openly expressed frustration over the status of his contract negotiations, the Red Sox have announced that the sides have agreed to a one-year deal worth $775,000, with a provision that will pay him another $25,000 if he is named to the A. L. All-Star team (and with Terry Francona set to manage the American League team the bonus would appear to be VERY attainable).
Papelbon will be paid a base salary that is $225,000 more than White Sox closer Bobby Jenks received a few years ago when he had a similar amount of service time (Jenks made $550,000). Yesterday, Pappy said he felt an obligation to help set the market for future players at his position… it appears he has done so.
Papelbon earned $425,550 last season.
Other players agreeing to terms today include Dustin Pedroia ($457,000), Jon Lester ($421,500), Manny Delcarmen ($421,000), Jacoby Ellsbury ($406,000), and Clay Buchholz ($396,000).
