Wakefield Outstanding In Second Spring Start
By Administrator | March 6, 2008
The Red Sox may have lost to the LA Dodgers today, 9-6, but the team got good news on several fronts.
Tim Wakefield tossed three shutout innings in his second outing of the spring this afternoon, allowing one base hit (to leadoff hitter Juan Pierre) and issuing two walks during a very effective outing. He was followed to the mound by Mike Timlin (2IP, 1ER), David Aardsma (2IP, 0 R), Brian Corey (1 IP, 0 R) and Craig Breslow (1 IP, 1 ER) before the roof caved in on a pair of minor league pitchers in the ninth inning — Hunter Smith and Lee Gronkiewicz surrendered seven runs (two earned) thanks in part to a throwing error by minor league shortstop Argenis Diaz (Single-A, Lancaster).

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who entered the game hitting .188 (3-for-16), snapped out of his early spring funk with a pair of hits and two RBI, CF Jacoby Ellsbury (.083, 1-for-12 entering the game) had a base hit and scored a run, and first baseman Sean “The Mayor” Casey added two more hits (he is hitting .444).
Game Note: The Red Sox pounded former teammate Derek Lowe — knocking him out of the box in the third inning after having scored five earned runs in two-plus innings pitched.
