Ortiz Jersey Fetches $175,100.00 For The Jimmy Fund

By Administrator | April 24, 2008

Gino Castignoli may have failed in his attempt to curse the New York Yankees, but his act of devotion to the Red Sox may ultimately help end a different kind of curse. Castignoli, the construction worker from the Bronx who is a Red Sox fan, dropped a David Ortiz jersey in wet concrete during construction of the new stadium, hoping to hex the Yankees.

The Yankees jackhammered the jersey out from under two feet of dried concrete after receiving information about the prank from anonymous tipsters… the jersey was then donated to The Jimmy Fund, the Red Sox’s official charity that is affiliated with Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to help raise funds for research.

The Jimmy Fund listed the jersey on eBay a week ago… the auction ended this afternoon shortly after noontime with a winning bid of $175,100 from Kevin Meehan, the owner of Imperialcars.com in Mendon, MA.

Mike Andrews, the former Red Sox second baseman who serves as Chairman of The Jimmy Fund, said the charity was “absolutely thrilled” with the winning bid. In a statement he said: “We are grateful for the generous bid, and extend our deep gratitude to the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox for coming together again in the fight against cancer”.

For his part, Meehan said he was eager to give to the Jimmy Fund because his father died of cancer and his stepfather has the disease: “It’s personal. It’s a lot deeper than just the shirt”.

Meehan plans to eventually display the jersey from his favorite Red Sox player in one of his car dealerships. He said he has no intention of selling it.

Meehan will also receive a new Ortiz jersey, a Yankees T-shirt and two tickets to a Red Sox game where he will be presented with the unusual piece of sports memorabilia.
