Sox Strand Opportunities To End Losing Streak In Tampa… Rays Win 5-4
By Administrator | April 26, 2008
The Red Sox lost their third straight ‘ugly’ game last night in Tampa, falling to the Rays 5-4 in 11 innings.
How ugly was it? The Sox were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position against Matt Garza, J P Howell, Dan Wheeler, Trever Miller, Gary Glover and Scott Dohmann — not exactly the kind of staff that would strike fear into the heart of the PawSox lineup. But there you have it.
Want an even uglier vision? They grounded into inning-ending double plays in both the 10th and 11th innings with the lead run in scoring position against the likes of Glover and Dohmann.
Uglier still? David Ortiz was 0-for-6 in the game, including 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position… he hit into the inning-ending double play in the top of the 11th with the lead run (Jason Varitek) standing at third base and Jonathan Papelbon poised to enter the game.
Instead, Red Sox Nation had to endure watching an ineffective Mike Timlin walk around the mound looking lost for the second consecutive day… unable to retire anyone in the bottom of the eleventh inning as the Rays scored the game-winning run.
Tim Wakefield started the game for Boston and was relatively lucky to surrender only four runs (three earned) in six innings… in an ugly outing, he allowed six hits and walked five as he managed to throw only 70 of his 113 pitches for strikes.
Okay, okay… I know I have beaten you over the head with the theme of this article — but it really was an UGLY game.
Manny Ramirez and Kevin Cash had three hits apiece to account for six of the ten Sox hits… Youkilis and Lugo joined Ortiz in going hitless.

Rays CF Carl Crawford hit two triples off Tim Wakefield… he had only one entering the game.

Dustin Pedroia needed extra innings but extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an 11th inning single.

Eric Hinske received his World Series ring from the Red Sox before the game.

Mike Lowell began his rehab assignment with Pawtucket this evening… he went 1-for-5 with a two-run single in helping the PawSox beat Syracuse, 6-1.
