Masterson, Colon To Start For Red Sox This Week
By Administrator | May 18, 2008
When the Red Sox placed Clay Buchholz on the disabled list last week it was clear that they would need to dip into the minor leagues for a starting pitcher for one or two starts, starting with the game against the KC Royals on Tuesday.
Speculation on who would be chosen had centered on Bartolo Colon and Justin Masterson.
After a disastrous 2007, Colon has been pitching for the Pawtucket Red Sox this spring — trying to regain the form that once made him a Cy Young Award winner. In spite of some injury woes, he has pitched very well. His contract required him to be promoted to Boston by May 1st, but due to his physical problems he and the team agreed to extend the deadline to June 1st. It seemed likely he might get the call for all of the above reasons.
Meanwhile, Masterson has pitched very well at Double-A except for two outings — including his most recent appearance on Thursday against the Trenton Thunder (6 IP, 7 ER). He authored a brilliant spot start for the Red Sox against the LA Angels at the end of last month (6 IP, 1 ER, 2 H).
So, who gets the start?
Mother Nature gave us the answer on Friday night. They BOTH do.
The rain out on Friday night scrambled the pitching rotation… rather than start someone on short rest, the Red Sox have opted to give both Colon and Masterson a start in the big leagues this week.
Masterson will pitch against Gil Meche on Tuesday. After the game, Masterson will be sent back to Portland and Colon will be recalled in order to handle the start on Wednesday (he will be opposed by Brett Tomko).
Dilemma solved.
