In The Silo: Buchholz Struggles In Second Rehab Outing; Sea Dogs Hitters Have A Field Day
By Administrator | May 31, 2008
In Durham, NC, the PawSox lost to the Durham Bulls (TB), 10-6.
Clay Buchholz, making his second rehab outing, struggled with his control, allowing three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out five over four innings. He surrendered a run in the second inning on two walks and a single, and then surrendered a pair of runs in the third inning on a walk, a force out and a home run (hit by former Oakland A’s 1B Dan Johnson).
Pawtucket cut the deficit to a run when Chris Carter and Brandon Moss led of the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs… they then tied the game in the sixth inning on a Jed Lowrie triple and Carter sac fly.
Durham took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a leadoff single, a double and three walks (one intentional) as reliever Eric Hull battled wildness… but the PawSox responded with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. With two out and no one on base, Jonathan Van Every doubled and Sean Danielson grounded an rbi-single into center field (Danielson took second base on the throw to home plate)… the next batter, Joe Thurston, singled home the PawSox right fielder to tie the game.
The Bulls answered the PawSox counterpunch with a harder knockout punch, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth… the big blast being a two-run home run by Elliott Johnson in the seventh inning. The PawSox scored another run in the eighth inning on a fielder’s choice to account for the final score of 10-6.
Edgar Martinez (1-1) took the loss, allowing all five runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The series continues tonight at 7:00 PM… David Pauley faces Durham’s Jeff Niemann

In Manchester, NH, the Sea Dogs beat the NH Fisher Cats (Tor), 15-10, in a slugfest that lasted more than four hours (4:09).
Portland scored fifteen runs despite failing to hit a single home run. Sea Dogs hitters abused five ‘Cats pitchers as they knocked twenty-one hits around MerchantsAuto.com Stadium and drew nine walks. Iggy Suarez led the attack with four hits (including three rbi-doubles) and five rbi… Tony Granadillo had four hits and four rbi… and Jeff Corsaletti had one hit, drew four walks and scored three runs.
Portland starter Kris Johnson didn’t fare any better than ‘Cats starter Ricky Romero (who allowed six earned runs). Johnson lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks. Mike James (2-1) earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief in which he allowed one earned run. Kyle Jackson allowed two runs in two innings pitched — the damage wasn’t any worse thanks to closer Beau Vaughan.
Vaughan entered the game in the seventh inning with the ‘Dogs leading 14-10… but New Hampshire had the bases loaded with no one out, and Blue Jays top prospect Travis Snider coming to the plate. Vaughan retired Snider on a 1-2-3 double play and then fanned Jacob Butler to end the inning. In all, Vaughan pitched three scoreless innings to earn his sixth save.
The series continues this afternoon at 1:00 PM, with Matt Goodson facing southpaw Brett Cecil.
