Red Sox Prevail In Extra Innings In Baltimore, 5-2

By Administrator | May 31, 2008

The Red Sox scored two runs in the first ininng, and then the bats fell silent for the rest of the night. In the thirteenth inning, three Baltimore errors led to three unearned runs as the Sox won, 5-2.

After the game, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said: “We’ll take them however we get them. That was kind of a loseable game — we had chances to lose that game and we didn’t”.

Thanks to the pitching.

Josh Beckett pitched six innings, allowing both Orioles runs on four hits and three walks while striking out ten… the Sox then got seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball from six different relief pitchers as Tito emptied the bullpen. Mike Timlin (3-3) earned the win, but it was a struggle as he allowed one hit and two walks in his one inning of work — but he managed to keep Baltimore off the scoreboard. Jonathan Papelbon retired the O’s in order in the lucky 13th inning, striking out two, to earn his fifteenth save.

The thirteenth inning follies began when catcher Ramon Hernandez dropped a David Ortiz foul popup… Papi was eventually retired, but the drop was a harbinger of things to come. Chad Bradford (2-2) got Manny Ramirez to hit a bouncer to third, but Melvin Mora’s throw soared over the head of 1B Kevin Millar. Lowell then lined a single to left, breaking the tie. Two more unearned runs scored later in the inning on a throwing error by shortstop Freddie Bynum.
