It Was WWE-Style Entertainment At Fenway Park — Crisp Charges Mound, ManRam Charges Youkilis In Dugout
By Administrator | June 6, 2008
Apparently in response to Coco Crisp’s hard slide at second inning in the eighth inning of last night’s game, Rays starting pitcher James Shields hit Coco Crisp on the right leg with a fastball at the start of the second inning of tonight’s game…
And Crisp charged the mound — sparking the first of two melees at Fenway Park this evening.

After being hit with a pitch in the second inning, Coco Crisp charged the mound. Rays pitcher James Shields threw a haymaker at Crisp and missed… Crisp threw a punch of his own and struck the back of Shields’ right shoulder… both players ended up on the ground underneath a pig-pile, with Crisp getting the worst of it… AP photo
After the game, Crisp spoke with reporters:
“I charged the mound… (Shields) tried to hit me with a haymaker. He missed. I threw a punch, and I pretty much missed… (we) went down to the ground… people were trying to pull my hair like little girls instead of throwing some real punches or something like that… I’m down on the ground, I mean the fight’s pretty much over baseball-term wise, (and Jonny Gomes) comes in late and throws some extra blows… that’s cool, I’ll cover up”.
Crisp added: “And actually I credit Shields, too, because he hit me in the leg… he didn’t try to hit me in the head… he didn’t like try to kill me”.

In the fourth inning, there was a brief disturbance in the Red Sox dugout… OF Manny Ramirez was seen being restrained as he tried to go after 1B Kevin Youkilis.

On its post-Celtics newscast, Channel 5 reported that several photographers said they witnessed ManRam slap Youkilis in the face shortly before he was restrained from a further confrontation.
Red Sox players refused to comment on the scuffle in post-game interviews.
