Suspensions Abound In Aftermath Of Fenway Brawl

By Administrator | June 6, 2008

Major League Baseball wasted no time in meting out discipline for last night’s brawl between the Red Sox and Rays at Fenway Park.

Eight players (3 Red Sox) were suspended a total of thirty-eight games, all were fined undisclosed amounts for their actions.

Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp got the stiffest penalty, a 7-game suspension, for charging the mound… he is appealing. Jon Lester was assessed a 5 game penalty for throwing inside / behind two Tampa Bay batters… he is not appealing. Sean Casey got 3 games for ‘being an aggressor’… he has not made a decision on an appeal as of yet.

For Tampa Bay, pitcher James Shields was handed a 6 game suspension, Jonny “Haymaker” Gomes got 5 games, Edwin Jackson got 5 games, Carl Crawford got 4 games, and Akinori Iwamura 3 games.

MLB staggered the punishments. The suspensions for Shields, Gomes, and Lester are slated to begin tonight… Crisp’s was supposed to begin tonight as well, but he’ll get to play while it is appealed… Crawford’s will begin June 11th… Jackson’s starts on June 13th, Casey’s begins June 14, and Iwamura’s on June 17th.

As a result of the punishment, Lester will likely only see his next start pushed back a day — thanks, in part, to Monday’s off day. Tonight’s starter, Bartolo Colon, will likely move up a day and start on Wednesday on regular rest, with Lester going Thursday.

Was Crisp surprised he was suspended? This afternoon he said: “Everybody gets suspended when they charge the mound”. ‘Nuff said.
