Drew, Wakefield Lead Sox In Rout Of Mariners, 11-3
By Administrator | June 7, 2008
Manny Ramirez got the Red Sox started this afternoon with a two-run bomb over the Green Monster that landed in the parking lot across Landsdowne Street; but Seattle pitching walked him three times in five plate appearances, thereby limiting his impact on the game.

Enter J D Drew.
The Red Sox right fielder has stepped into the breach created by David Ortiz’ current absence and performed admirably. This afternoon, Drew led a thirteen hit attack with three hits, including his 7th home run of the season, a pair of rbi and three runs scored in the Sox 11-3 win. Coco Crisp, Kevin Youkilis and Alex Cora each added a pair of hits and combined for four rbi in the Boston win.
Tim Wakefield allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings pitched to even his record at 4-4. He walked two and struck out six. Craig Hansen pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jonathan Papelbon finished up in the ninth (allowing an unearned run).
In spite of all the Red Sox runs, the game lasted just 2:45 thanks, in large part, to Wakefield: “I’ve always been the type that likes to keep the game going. I slow the game and make adjustments. Obviously, I didn’t need to today, so I just wanted to get the ball and keep throwing”.
After Ramirez put the Sox up 2-0 in the first, Seattle tied the game on a two-run double in the third inning. The Sox then scored nine unanswered runs before the M’s scored an unearned run in the ninth inning.

With his first inning home run, Ramirez tied Eddie Murray for 23rd on the career list.

Kevin Youkilis dropped a throw in the ninth, ending his major league-record 238-game errorless streak at first. He started the game at third, but moved over in the eighth. He explained: “The ball was on me when I spun (to cover first), that was it. It’s no big deal”.

Manager Terry Francona said CF Jacoby Ellsbury (sprained right wrist) could be back in the lineup on Tuesday.
