Colon, Timlin Blistered In Red Sox 8-2 Loss At Philadelphia
By Administrator | June 17, 2008
Bartolo Colon had his worst outing as a member of the Red Sox tonight, allowing four runs on four hits (including three home runs) in four innings before leaving the game with a stiff back. Whether his poor outing resulted from his back problems is a matter of conjecture, but Colon ascribed the back problem to one of his Ruthian swings at the plate.
After the Red Sox halved their deficit in the fifth inning, the Phillies jumped on top of reliever Mike Timlin in the sixth inning, scoring four runs against the veteran right-hander in just 2/3 of an inning during Philadelphia’s 8-2 win over Boston this evening at Citizens Bank Park.
After Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels retired the Red Sox in the top of the first inning, striking out J D Drew and Manny Ramirez with a runner at second base, the Phillies jumped on Colon in the bottom of the inning with a pair of home runs. Jimmy Rollins led off the frame with a solo home run… that was followed a short time later by Ryan Howard’s two-run home run.
Howard added another home run, a solo shot in the third inning, to extend the Philadelphia lead to 4-0.
The Red Sox got back into the game in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of back-to-back home runs by Dustin Pedroia and J D Drew, but they would not threaten to score again until Brandon Moss hit a two-out double in the ninth inning.
Mike Timlin came into the game in the sixth inning. He was unable to throw strikes consistently, and when he did throw strikes the pitches were in the middle of the plate. He got hammered. He issued walks to the first and last batter he faced… in between he surrendered three singles and a triple (to Howard) as Philly scored four more times.
Meanwhile, Hamels allowed just two runs on seven hits in 7+ innings… in his last three outings, he is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA. After the game, the southpaw proclaimed: “I believe we’re destined to play each other in the World Series. We can compete with them any day of the week”.
Settle down Cole, it’s not even July yet!
Howard finished 3-for-5 with two HR and four RBI… it was his second multi-homer game in four nights and his fourth 4+ RBI game in his last eight games (he is the first player with four games of 4+ RBI in an eight-game stretch since Albert Belle in 2000).

Kevin Youkilis was scratched from the lineup because of muscle spasms in the middle of his back.

Dustin Pedroia had three of Boston’s eight hits.

Jacoby Ellsbury made an excellent diving catch in center field in the third inning.
