Angels Duo Throws No-Hitter, But Halos Lose Anyway
By Administrator | June 29, 2008
LA Angels starter Jered Weaver and reliever Jose Arredondo combined to no-hit the LA Dodgers last night, yet the performance still wasn’t good enough to get the Angels a win. Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley and two relievers shut out the Angels in the Dodgers 1-0 victory.
Weaver was victimized by his own fielding error with one out in the fifth inning. He misplayed an infield squibber by Matt Kemp that allowed the center fielder to reach first base safely… Kemp then stole second and went to third on catcher Jeff Mathis’s throwing error. A moment later he scored on 3B Blake DeWitt’s sacrifice fly.
Weaver pitched six no-hit innings but was pulled for a pinch-hitter with his club trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning… Arredondo pitched the last two innings. Because the Dodgers didn’t bat in the bottom of the ninth inning, the game doesn’t qualify as a no-hitter.
With the win, Joe Torre’s Dodgers became just the fifth team in modern major league history to win a game in which they didn’t get a hit… it was the first such game since Matt Young and the Red Sox no-hit Cleveland yet managed to lose back in 1992.
Baseball’s other no-hit losers were Andy Hawkins of the Yankees in 1990, Steve Barber and Stu Miller of Baltimore in 1967, and Ken Johnson of Houston in 1964.
