Jon Lester: Stopper. Sox Shut Out NYY 7-0 On Southpaw’s Complete Game Five-Hitter
By Administrator | July 3, 2008
Jon Lester was brilliant tonight in The Bronx! The southpaw pitched a five-hit shutout, walking two and striking out eight, as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 7-0 at Yankee Stadium. Lester threw 105 pitches, 72 were for strikes (well above the 2:1, strike:ball ratio I believe is required for an outing to be described as ‘brilliant’).
The outing was desperately needed by the struggling Sox — it ended a five-game losing streak.
Lester walked the first two Yankees batters he faced, but he ended the first by striking out A-Rod and
Jason Giambi. He allowed two hits in an inning only once, in the eighth inning, and induced three ‘grounded-into-double-plays’
Meanwhile, Sox batters roughed up Andy Pettitte, who lasted 4 2/3 inning and allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks.
Three singles and a throwing error helped the Red Sox jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first… they added two more runs on Jacoby Ellsbury’s rbi-double in the second inning. They added single runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth inning.
In his return from a five-game suspension, Coco Crisp led the Sox attack with two hits, a stolen base and two runs scored… Ellsbury and Mike Lowell each had a hit and two rbi.

Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Yankees OF Melky Cabrera singled, ending a career-worst 0-for-19 slump.
