Halos Pound Dice-K; Sox Lose, 7-5
By Administrator | July 29, 2008
Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka surrendered a pair of home runs in a six-run sixth inning as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Red Sox, 7-5, this evening at Fenway Park.
Trailing 1-0 entering the botom of the fourth inning, the Red Sox scored a pair of runs on a Manny Ramirez two-run single. But in the top of the sixth inning the Angels exploded for six runs — five before a single out was recorded. The rally was keyed by Casey Kotchman’s two-run home run into the Red Sox bullpen and Torri Hunter’s three-run bomb onto Landsdowne Strteet.
Jed Lowrie doubled home a run in the sixth, Jacoby Ellsbury had a run-scoring single in the eighth and Manny Ramirez homered off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth to shave the deficit to two runs… but Mike Lowell’s fly out to the warning track in left field ended the ballgame.
Ramirez’ home run was his 20th of the season, making him the eighth player in baseball history to hit that many homers in fourteen consecutive seasons.
LA starter Jered Weaver allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings to record his ninth win.
Matsuzaka fell to 11-2, allowing six runs in five-plus innings of work.
