Ellsbury’s Bat, Wakefield’s Knuckler Lead Sox Past Kansas City, 8-2
By Administrator | August 7, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits, including his sixth home run of the season, to help power the Red Sox to an 8-2 victory in the rubber game of their series in Kansas City this evening.
Tim Wakefield’s knuckleball was in vintage form, as he limited the Royals to two runs (one earned) on four hits over six innings. He walked no one and struck out six… at one point he retiring ten Royals hitters in a row. The Royals managed to get three of their four hits in the fifth inning… after a pair of singles, Kevin Cash committed a passed ball, allowing both runners to advance into scoring position. Ross Gload’s base hit then drove home the only KC runs of the evening.
Manny Delcarmen, Justin Masterson and Jonathan Papelbon each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of the knuckleballer.
The Sox scored three runs in the fifth inning to break open a scoreless game… Jed Lowrie drove a two-run double to deep center field and David Ortiz singled him home. After KC scored their runs in the bottom of the frame, the Red Sox answered with a J D Drew two-run single in the top of the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, Ellsbury drove a three-run home run over the fence in center field to account for the final score.
Jason Bay had two more hits for the Red Sox, while Jed Lowrie and J.D. Drew drove in two runs apiece.
With the win, the Red Sox finished their season series 6-1 against the Royals.
Royals rookie starter Luke Hochevar lost for the third time in his last four starts (with an ERA of 7.48 in those starts).

Kevin Youkilis was in the right hand by a Hochevar pitch in the first inning… he left the game a short time later with a contusion. X-rays were negative.
