Sox Submit Waiver Claim On SD’s Giles

By Administrator | August 7, 2008

The San Diego Union Tribune is reporting that the Red Sox submitted a waiver claim on Padres outfielder Brian Giles yesterday. The teams now have forty-eight hours (ending tomorrow afternoon) to work out a trade or, under MLB’s rules, San Diego could pull him back off waivers.

The glitch is that Giles has a limited no-trade provision in his contract and the Red Sox are one of eight teams to which he can block a trade. He has one year remaining on the deal (a team option at $9 million, $11 million if he is traded).

Whereas he would be a fourth outfielder in Boston, greatly reducing his playing time, it is quite conceivable that Giles would block the deal.
