Late Rally Makes A Winner Of Beckett, 5-1

By Administrator | August 12, 2008

Chicago southpaw John Danks took a no-hitter into the seventh inning tonight… that’s when Kevin Youkilis drilled a single into left-center field to jump-start the Red Sox offense. It was all downhill for Danks and the White Sox thereafter… Mike Lowell walked to put two runners on base, and then J D Drew ripped a two-out, two-run double to center field to give the Red Sox their first lead en route to a 5-1 win over the White Sox.

Boston starter Josh Beckett was the beneficiary of the late BoSox barrage… he limited the ChiSox to one run on seven hits over eight innings, walking no one and whiffing eight hitters. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth inning to finish the game as the Red Sox salvaged a split of the series.

Jed Lowrie added a clutch two-run double in the ninth inning… Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a run-scoring single to provide plenty of insurance for Beckett, who won his eleventh game and lowered his ERA to 3.92.

Manager Terry Francona said: “(Josh) looks like he’s primed to go ahead and be the guy that we need”.

It was Beckett’s second consecutive win after three straight losses.

After the game, Danks said: “My main goal is to get us into the eighth inning with the lead, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to do it. It was tough knowing we had a one-run lead against a team like this, that any one of them can hit a homer at any time. I knew there wasn’t much room for error with Beckett. He’s a great, proven pitcher and he had his ‘A’ stuff today”.

He certainly did. The White Sox scored in the third inning on A.J. Pierzynski’s sacrifice fly. That was it.

The Red Sox held the slumping David Ortiz out of the lineup to rest his surgically repaired left wrist.

Dustin Pedroia went 0-4, ending his 29-game road hit streak.
