Batting Practice At Fenway Park — Red Sox Beat Rangers, 19-17 (That Is NOT A Typo)

By Administrator | August 13, 2008

The range of emotions for fans at Fenway Park tonight ran the gamut — from exhiliration, to embarrassment, to desperation, and then back to exhiliration.

In one of the wildest games of any season, Kevin Youkilis’ three-run home run in the eighth inning propeled the Red Sox to a 19-17 win over the Rangers, after Texas had fought back from a ten-run first inning deficit to grab a 16-14 lead after 6 1/2 innings.

The home run was Youk’s second home run of the evening.

But he was only the second Red Sox batter of the evening to hit two home runs… DH David Ortiz had accomplished the feat much earlier in the evening — in the first inning, to be precise. Papi hit a pair of three-run home runs in the first inning as part of a ten-run outburst that gave the Red Sox a 10-0 lead after one inning of play… but rookie Charlie Zink, making his major league debut, was unable to take advantage of the offensive outburst.

Rangers outfielder Marlon Byrd had five of Texas’ twenty hits, to lead the Rangers rally… he also drove in three runs and scored four others. 2B Ian Kinsler had a pair of hits, including his 16th HR, and four rbi… 1B Chris Davis also had two hits and four rbi for the Rangers.

In addition to Ortiz (3 hits, 2 HR, 6 rbi) and Youkilis (2 hits, 2 HR, 5 rbi), the Sox other major offensive weapon was 2B Dustin Pedroia, who had five hits and scored five runs.

With the game tied at 16-16 and a runner at second base two outs in the eighth inning, Texas walked Big Papi in order to pitch to Youkilis — who proceeded to blast a pitch off the Sports Authority banner atop the Green Monster to give the Sox a 19-16 lead.

The nineteen runs were the most runs scored by the Red Sox this season… the Sox eighth-inning rally ruined a Rangers comeback that matched the greatest ever against Boston (the Sox also squandered a ten-run lead on June 4, 1989, against Toronto in a game they lost 13-11 in 12 innings).

Jonathan Papelbon allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning, but settled down to record his 32nd save in 36 opportunities.

Charlie Zink made his major league debut in place of the injured Tim Wakefield… he was pulled from the game in the fifth inning having allowed eight earned runs in 4 1/3 IP.

———————————-

Mike Lowell left the game after straining a muscle on his right side during his at-bat in the seventh inning.

Ortiz became the fifth player in AL history to hit two homers in the first inning of a game… he tied the AL record for most RBIs in one inning with six.
