Sox Place Lowell On 15-Day DL

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell was placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a strained oblique muscle, suffered during last night’s game. While Lowell was put on the 15-day DL, these injuries often take much longer than fifteen days to heal, so time will tell how long the team will be without his services.
Lowell strained the muscle taking a swing in his at-bat in the seventh inning… he then struck out looking — because it hurt too much to try to swing the bat: “I took those two swings my last at-bat. On the first one I felt like a little grab on my side, on the second one I felt something a lot more significant. The last pitch I kind of panicked, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t think I could swing. I was kind of hoping he’d just flop a curveball or something. I’ve never had this happen to me before. It’s frustrating.”
After the game, his discomfort was obvious: “I can’t really stand up straight. I feel like keeping bent over, it feels a lot more comfortable, and getting up out of a chair isn’t the greatest thing”.
As for the stint on the DL, Lowell said the Sox trainers have told him to take it easy… the hope is that the time off will help his strained right hip flexor, which has troubled him since the end of June, heal.
David Pauley was recalled from Pawtucket to take Lowell’s place on the roster… look for the Sox to swing a deal for a corner infielder to provide some depth.
