By Administrator | August 27, 2008
Boston vs NY Yankees at Yankee Stadium, 7:05 PM
Boston… 76-55 (.580)… 3 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay
NYY… 70-61 (.534)… 9 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay
Paul Byrd vs Sidney Ponson
Paul Byrd is 8-11, 4.61 in 2008… he is 1-1, 5.40 in two starts with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Cleveland Indians. The right-hander is 1-1, 6.75 against the Yankees thus far this season.
In two starts against the Yanks this season, both with Cleveland, he pitched twelve innings allowing nine earned runs on fourteen hits, no walks and no strikeouts. He has surrendered six home runs to the Evil Empire in those twelve innings pitched. He was the starting pitcher on April 25th at Jacobs Field in a game the Indians won 6-4… he pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits (three home runs). He then was the losing pitcher at Yankees Stadium in a game the Indians lost, 6-3, on May 8th… he threw 6 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits (again, three of the hits were homers).
Derek Jeter is 12-for-33 (.364) with three rbi in his career against Byrd… Hideki Matsui has also hit .364 against him (4-for-11), with one home run and one rbi… Jason Giambi is 6-for-19 (.316), with four homers and six rbi.
At the other end of the spectrum, Alex Rodriguez is only a .222 hitter against Byrd (4-for-18) with one homer and four rbi.
Sidney Ponson is 7-4, 4.67 in 2008… he is 0-1, 15.75 against the Red Sox this season. In one start against the Sox, he pitched 4 innings, allowing seven earned runs on ten hits and one walk.
He faced Boston in Boston on July 27th and was the losing pitcher in the Red Sox 9-2 win over the Yankees.
David Ortiz LOVES to hit against Ponson — he is 18-for-39 (.462), with three homers and ten rbi in his career against “Sir Sidney”… similarly, Jason Varitek has feasted on Ponson (14-for-43, .326, with two home runs and six rbi).
Dustin Pedroia is a perfect 5-for-5, with three doubles and one rbi, in limited action against Ponson.
Just a hunch: Don’t be surprised if Papi and Pedroia have huge nights in Yankee Stadium tonight…
