In Portland, ME, Clay Buchholz pitched eight shutout innings to lead the Sea Dogs over the NH Fisher Cats, 7-0, at Hadlock Field. With tonight’s win and the Binghamton Mets’ loss in New Britain, Portland is now in position to clinch its fourth straight playoff berth tomorrow afternoon.
Buchholz pitched eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one loss… he retired the final ten batters he faced and fanned ten Fisher Cats in his outing. Reliever Mike James closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning… he hasn’t allowed a run in eight straight outings.
Portland did not score off NH starter Jared Gothreaux, who worked five scoreless innings on four hits, two walks and a strikeout… but the Sea Dogs seven runs against New Hampshire’s bullpen.
In the seventh inning, Tony Granadillo and Mickey Hall singled and scored on Argenis Diaz’ two-run triple… after Zach Daeges and Aaron Bates walked, Lars Anderson laced an rbi-single.
Portland then scored four more times in the eighth inning. Granadillo led off with a triple and Mickey Hall walked, Granadillo scored on an rbi-double by Diaz, and then Zach Daeges walked to load the bases. Hall scored on a single by Aaron Bates, Lars Anderson drew a walk to force home Diaz, and Mark Wagner drove home the game’s final run with a sac fly.
The Sea Dogs will send righty Ryne Lawson to the hill on Sunday afternoon in the hope of securing the team’s post-season spot.
