Today’s Red Sox Transactions

By Administrator | August 31, 2008

After winning his major league debut last night, right-hander Michael Bowden was optioned back to Pawtucket this morning.

The team has announced that he will pitch out of the bullpen for the Triple-A playoffs (he will pitch out of the bullpen on Friday night, his regular day of work). In my opinion, NOT a good thing for the PawSox championship aspiratiions, but it positions the twenty-one-year-old from Aurora, IL, to be a potential contributor for the Sox in September.

The Red Sox called up Jonathan Van Every from Pawtucket to take Bowden’s spot on the 25-man roster.

The former Cleveland farm-hand had a cup of coffee earlier this year with the Red Sox… in May, he was with the Red Sox for four days. He played in one game and went 1-for-3 against the Orioles at Camden Yards (a double). For the season, he hit .263, with 26 homers, in 380 at-bats for the PawSox.

As with Bowden moving to the bullpen, Van Every’s promotion will NOT enhance the PawSox plight in the post-season, but that’s obviously not the primary consideration in these transactions. Van Every’s presence in Boston (with JD Drew now on the DL) will provide the Red Sox some much-needed insurance on their roster.

[NOTE: I interviewed Van Every in Pawtucket a few weeks ago and will try to get that interview published in the next day or so]
