This Day In Baseball History: September 1st (Buchholz Throws No-Hitter)

By Administrator | September 1, 2008

In 1890, on Labor Day at Washington Park, Brooklyn won three games against Pittsburgh in the first tripleheader ever played… the Bridegrooms beat the visiting Alleghenys, 10-9, 3-2 and 8-4.

1906 In the longest game in American League history, the Philadelphia beat the Red Sox in 24 innings, 4-1… both starters went the distance as A’s hurler Jack Coombs bested Boston’s Joe Harris.

In 1945, Phillies outfielder Vince DiMaggio tied a major league record by hitting his fourth grand slam of the season.

In 1964, Masanori Murakami became the first Japanese-born player to appear in the major leagues in the United States… the Osuki native threw a scoreless inning for the SF Giants against the NY Mets in his debut.

In 1967, after 20 scoreless innings, which equaled the major league mark for a scoreless tie, Dick Groat drew a bases loaded walk to give the SF Giants 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Gaylord Perry threw sixteen innings of shutout ball in the game, yet only got a No Decision for his effort.

In 1971, at Parc Jarry in Montreal, the Pittsburgh Pirates become the first major league team to start an all-black team; the lineup included infielders Al Oliver (1b), Rennie Stennet (2b), Jackie Hernandez (ss) Dave Cash (3b) and outfielders Willie Stargell (lf), Gene Clines (cf), Roberto Clemente (rf) with Dock Ellis (p) and Manny Sanguillen (c) making up the battery.

In 1998, Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire homered twice to break Hack Wilson’s single-season NL home run record of 56… “Big Mac” tied the record in the seventh inning and set a new record in the ninth inning off reliever Don Pall.

In 2007, in only his second major league start, Red Sox rookie Clay Buchholz no-hit the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park… the Red Sox won the game, 10-0.
