Red Sox Bludgeon Liz, Orioles, 14-2

By Administrator | September 3, 2008

The Red Sox bludgeoned Orioles starter Radhames Liz and three relievers this evening en route to a 14-2 win over Baltimore. Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Coco Crisp led the twenty-hit attack with three hits apiece… Pedroia drove in five runs, Ortiz drove in four runs, and Crisp scored three times during the rout.

Since the All-Star break, Pedroia has hit .366 (64-for-175) to raise his overall batting average to a league-leading .330 [before the All-Star break he hit .314 (124-for-395)]. He has now hit in seven straight games, during which time frame he is batting .600 (18-for-30).

His recent exploits have inspired Red Sox fans to start chanting “MVP!” whenever he steps into the batter’s box.

Southpaw Jon Lester pitched five innings allowing one run on six hits… but in a departure from recent outings, he was inefficient — walking four and throwing ninety-nine pitches in the abbreviated outing.

Orioles starter Radhames Liz had his second brutal outing against the Red Sox this season… on July 12th he allowed eight runs in 2 1/3 innings, tonight he allowed nine runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Ortiz hit a pair of bases-loaded two-run doubles (in the third and fifth innings)… Pedroia hit a sacrifice fly in the third, a three-run home run in the fifth, and an rbi-double in the seventh inning.

The Red Sox won for the tenth time in fourteen games… they are now only four games behind Tampa Bay (who lost 7-2 to NY this evening) and extended their lead in the AL wild-card race to four games (who lost 7-5 to Toronto).

Kevin Youkilis was scratched before the game with lower back spasms… he was replaced by Jeff Bailey.

The game was the 454th consecutive sellout at Fenway Park, one short of the major league record set by Cleveland from 1995-2001.

The Red Sox are now a season-high 24-games-over-.500
