This Day In Baseball History: November 13th

By Administrator | November 13, 2008

In 1899, the National League announced that, starting with the 1900 season, there would be two umpires working each game.

In 1931, Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert bought the International League’s franchise in Newark, NJ… over the years, the Bears would be very successful and send many players to the Bronx.

In 1934, Bucky Harris was re-hired in Washington to replace manager Joe Cronin, who had been sold to Boston… Harris had previously managed the Senators to American League championships in 1924 and 1925.

In 1968, Bob Gibson won the National League MVP award (22-9, 268 strikeouts, 1.12 ERA), narrowly edging Pete Rose in the balloting.

In 1978, the NY Yankees signed former Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant as free agent to a two-year $875,000 contract.

In 1979, for the first time in major league history, two players shared the National League MVP Award, as Cardinals first baseman Keith Hernandez and Pirates outfielder Willie Stargell each received the same number of points in the voting.

In 1989, after 16 years with the same team, Jim Rice was released by the Red Sox… “Jim Ed” retired from the game largely due to problems with his eyesight, and ended with a career .298 average and 382 home runs.

In 1990, A’s hurler Bob Welch (27-6, 2.95,127) won the AL Cy Young Award… his 27 wins were the most in the majors since 1972 when Steve Carlton won that many for the last place Phillies.

In 1998, the ball thrown by Red Sox hurler hurler Howard Ehmke and hit by Babe Ruth for first home run hit in Yankee Stadium was sold at an auction for 126,500 (110,000 bid + 15% commission).

In 2000, Red Sox hurler Pedro Martinez (18-6,1.74) became the first pitcher in history to win the American League Cy Young Award unanimously in consecutive years… including his NL Cy Young Award win in 1997, he had won the ‘top pitcher’ honor in three of four seasons.

In 2006, three of the top four finishers in the National League Rookie of the Year voting are Marlins teammates… Florida shortstop Hanley Ramirez narrowly edged Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman for the award, with Florida teammates Dan Uggla (2B) and Josh Johnson (P) finishing third and fourth, respectively.
