The Little Man Who Could! Pedroia Wins AL MVP Award

By Administrator | November 19, 2008

Admit it! You were worried that Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia and 1B Kevin Youkilis might split enough of the MVP votes to allow someone like Twins 1B Justin Morneau to win the honor.

After all, both Pedroia and Youkilis had fantastic seasons and were viable contenders for the award… Pedroia hit .326, with 17 HR, 83 RBI and 20 SB while Youkilis hit .312, with 29 HR and 115 RBI.

But when the smoke cleared and all of the ballots were counted, it was Pedroia who easily out-distanced Morneau and Youkilis to take home the trophy. He accumulated 16 of the 28 first-place votes cast by the members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and finished with 317 points). Morneau finished in second place with 7 first-place votes and 257 points… Youkilis finished in third place after garnering 2 first place votes and 201 points.

C Joe Mauer of the Twins (188 points), OF Carlos Quentin of the White Sox (160 points) and closer Francisco Rodriguez of the LA Angels (143 points) finished out the Top Six.

Pedroia is just the third ballplayer in major league history to win the Rookie of the Year award in one year and the MVP Award in the following year — after Cal Ripken Jr and Ryan Howard. He’s only the fourth second baseman in AL history to win the MVP award, following Nellie Fox (1959), Joe Gordon (1942) and Charlie Gehringer (1937).

He is the 10th Red Sox player to earn the award… following Jimmie Foxx (1938), Ted Williams (1946 and 1949), Jackie Jensen (1958), Carl Yastrzemski (1967), Fred Lynn (1975), Jim Rice (1978), Roger Clemens (1986) and Mo Vaughn (1995).

Pedroia did not have an MVP bonus provision in his contract… Morneau will be paid $75,000 for his second-place finish and Youkilis will earn $25,000 for finishing third. In my opinion, the Red Sox ownership could (should) commit themselves to earning some good will with the ballplayer — and the fans — by paying Pedroia at least $50,000 (double the amount paid to Youkilis).
