As Expected, Red Sox Offer Arbitration To ‘Tek, Byrd

According to a press release issued by the team, the Red Sox have offered salary arbitration to free agents Jason Varitek and Paul Byrd, while declining to extend an offer to Sean Casey, Bartolo Colon, Alex Cora, Mark Kotsay, David Ross, Curt Schilling and Mike Timlin.
As a result, the Red Sox are eligible to receive compensation for Varitek, a type A free agent, and / or Byrd, a Type B free agent. If either player rejects the offer and then signs with another team, the Red Sox get thir picks.
Players offered salary arbitration have until December 7th to accept or decline the offer.
Under the terms of the MLB / MLBPA collective bargaining agreement, the Sox retain the right to negotiate with and sign any of their nin free agents.
Varitek hit .220, with 13 home runs and 43 rbi in 131 games this season — his 12th major league campaign with the Red Sox.
Byrd combined for an 11-12 record and posted a 4.60 ERA in thirty starts with both Cleveland and Boston.

In other news, the NY Yankees declined to offer arbitration to ANY of their free agents, including Andy Pettitte and Bobby Abreu. Other notable players not offered arbitration at this hour are Adam Dunn (AZ), Tom Glavine (ATL), Trevor Hoffman (SD), John Smoltz (ATL), Frank Thomas (OAK) and Kerry Wood (CC).
The LA Angels offered arbitration to closer Francisco Rodriguez, 1B Mark Teixeira and two others; the LA Dodgers offered arbitration to Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe and Casey Blake; and the Milwaukee Brewers offered arbitration to both CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets. Other players of note who have been offered arbitration are AJ Burnett (TOR), Brian Fuentes (COL), Orlando Hudson (AZ), Raul Ibanez (SEA) and Oliver Perez (NYM).
