Winter Meetings Update: Maddux Retirement Is The BIG News Thus Far
By Administrator | December 8, 2008
Little has happened at The Bellagio thus far on Day One of Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings, unless you consider SS Adam Everett’s one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers to be especially noteworthy.
Former Braves / Cubs / Dodgers / Padres pitcher Greg Maddux, 42, a sure-bet Hall-of-Famer, officially announced his retirement today. He finished his twenty-three year career with a record of 355 - 227 and a 3.16 ERA (he ranks eighth on the career wins list, one ahead of Roger Clemens). He earned four consecutive NL Cy Young Awards from 1992 - 1995 and a remarkable eighteen Gold Gloves, including one this year.
During his press conference, the soft-spoken Maddux said: “I really just came out here today to say thank you. I appreciate everything this game has given me. It’s going to be hard to walk away obviously, but it’s time. I have a family now that I need to spend some more time with. I still think I can play the game, but not as well as I would like to, so it’s time to say goodbye”.
