Winter Meetings Chatter: Red Sox Meet With Sabathia And Burnett; Mets Offer K-Rod A Contract; Blake, Dodgers Reportedly Agree On Deal; More
By Administrator | December 9, 2008
FOXSports.com is reporting that a Red Sox contingent consisting of Theo Epstein, Terry Francona and John Farrell met with free agent southpaw CC Sabathia this evening at the MLB Winter Meetings… it was a busy day, as ESPN.com is reporting that the Sox also met with the agent for A J Burnett on Day One of the meetings in Las Vegas.

Former LA Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez picked the wrong year to be a free agent.
On the heels of setting a major league record with 62 saves last season, he talked about seeking a five-year deal worth in the vicinity of $65 million; but the market for closers hasn’t developed and it seems that, if anything, the current environment for closers is a ‘buyer’s market’ due to the current economic climate and the availability of closers in free agency (Brian Fuentes, Trevor Hoffman).
The New York Daily News is reporting that the NY Mets have made an offer to K-Rod — for two years at approximately $24 million.
MLB.com is reporting that the Mets offer was for three years.

ESPN is reporting that free agent 3B Casey Blake and the LA Dodgers have agreed on a three-year, $17 million deal.

San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy has again stated that he will not accept a trade to an American League club. On the heals of that news, Padres GM Kevin Towers told reporters that Peavy would either be dealt to the Chicago Cubs or not at all.
The Cubbies are on the clock.
It appears that a couple of three-way deals are being discussed — one among San Diego, Chicago and the Baltimore Orioles and the other among SD, Chicago and Philadelphia.
It is not known how Tribune Corp’s bankruptcy filing will effect the ballclub’s acquisition of Peavy, who is owed $63 million over the next four seasons, if at all. [Tribune Corp owns the Chicago Cubs]

According to MLB’s Winter Meetings blog, the Dodgers and former Red Sox 2B Mark Loretta have agreed on a one-year deal worth approximately $1.4 million… the deal is subject to a Loretta passing a physical examination (which is reportedly scheduled for tomorrow).
