Lugo To Have Surgery On Tuesday
By Administrator | March 15, 2009
Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday… Dr. Thomas Gill will perform the operation to determine the extent of Lugo’s knee injury (believed to be a torn meniscus).
Manager Terry Francona said: “It’s a little hard to determine the severity of the injury (based on the results of the MRI), that’s why we have (Dr. Gill)”.
According to the Boston Globe, team captain Jason Varitek underwent the same procedure in 2007… he missed three weeks of action. General manager Theo Epstein said it’s possible that the scope will find less damage to the knee than expected and that Lugo could be back sooner than expected… of course, the converse could happen, too.
The GM said: “Our expectation is that he’s going to be back and available real close to opening day. If he misses time in the season, we’re talking days unless we find something that we don’t expect to see in there”.
If Lugo is going to miss time in the regular season, it would seem to bode well for utilityamn Nick Green, who has had an excellent spring thus far (he is hitting .387, with 2 HR). Asked about his prospects, Green said: “Any time you get an opportunity, you’ve got to be ready for it. Things happen in this game that are unfortunate. It stinks. If I have an opportunity because of that, then I just want to go out and take a shot at it”.
