Kevin Mench’s Streak: The Story Behind The Story

By Administrator | April 30, 2006

From the category of “there is no such thing as a stupid question”.

Texas Rangers outfielder Kevin Mench suffered from a miserable start this year.

Throughout the first ten days of the season, he was hobbled with a sore ‘great toe’ on his right foot as he scuffled at the plate and in the field. So one day, hitting coach Brook Jacoby asked Mench if his shoes were too tight.

Too tight? Silly question, right?

Wrong!

The answer apparently was ‘yes’.

Mench started wearing size 12 shoes since he was 15 years old. After Jacoby’s question, he went to be examined by a foot specialist. Mench was told he needed a bigger shoe… so he switched from a size 12 to a 12 1/2 cleat — and then went on a tear.

Entering last night, he had homered in all seven games played since making the switch — with 19 RBIs — setting the record for right-handed hitters and bringing him to within a single game of the MLB record.

He was held homerless last night.
