In The Silo: Killing Time During A Rain Delay

Last night’s game between the Portland Sea Dogs and the NH Fisher Cats was halted during the second inning due to rain.

Soon after the umpires directed the grounds crew to put the tarp on the infield, the Sea Dogs starters disappeared from the dugout, headed for the batting cage and / or training room to stay loose. While the starters disappeared to the bowels of the stadium, others found a variety of ways to amuse themselves.

Some fans beckoned for autographs from the side of the dugout. While most players won’t sign once the game has begun, former major league pitcher Kason Gabbard and relief pitcher Chris Province obliged by signing a couple dozen autographs… SOX1FAN photo

Gabbard spent much of his time perfecting his cutter - with a pair of scissors. Gabbard cut the hide to expose the twine underneath… the twine was then used for a variety of purposes… SOX1FAN photo

Reliever Andrew Dobies used the twine from another ball to go ‘fishing for fans’. The twine was wrapped around a baseball and then placed near the edge of the dugout roof. As young fans would approach in the hope of snagging the ball, a teammate (serving as lookout) would signal to pull the ball back into the dugout. Two young fans successfully attained a baseball in this manner — soaked from diving onto the dugout, but thankful for the cherished momento. SOX1FAN
