G76: Lester, Sox Shoot Down Orioles, 4-0
By Administrator | June 30, 2009
Jon Lester continued his dominance over the Baltimore last night with seven innings of shutout ball to lead the Red Sox over the Orioles, 4-0.
Lester improved to 8-0, 2.18, in his career against the O’s. He retired six of the seven leadoff batters he faced and didn’t allow a runner past second base all night. He allowed five hits, walked no one and struck out eight.
Manny Delcarmen (2/3 IP), Hideki Okajima (1/3 IP), Ramon Ramirez (2/3 IP) and Jonathan Papelbon (1/3 IP) pitched two innings of one-hit ball to seal the win.
Pappy notched his nineteenth save of the season… it was the 132nd save of his career, tying him with Bob Stanley for the most saves in Red Sox history.
The Sox offense gave Lester an early lead, building a 4-0 lead against rookie Jason Berken by the fourth inning.
Right fielder J D Drew led the offense with three hits and finished the night a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Batting leadoff for only the second time this season, he got the night started with a bang as he led off the game with a triple… he scored moments later on Dustin Pedroia’s rbi-single to center field.
In the fourth inning, leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury was hit by a pitch… he stole saecond base and scored on Jason Varitek’s run-scoring single. Drew finished the scoring with a two-run shot to right-center field.
The rest of the night belonged ot the pitchers.
Berken gave up four runs on eight hits. He walked two and hit two batters in five innings pitched.

The Sox went 3 for 3 in stolen base attempts… Ellsbury had two and Pedroia the other. O’s rookie catcher Matt Wieters has caught only two of 17 runners attempting to steal.

Lester has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last six starts.

Kevin Youkilis was robbed of a home run by Baltimore CF Adam Jones, who reached high over the wall in left-center field to bring a potential homer back into the yard for an out.
