In 1912, Giants’ southpaw Rube Marquard won his 19th consecutive game from the start of the season, beating the Dodgers, 2-1.
In 1947, the Cleveland Indians purchased the contract of Larry Doby from the Newark Eagles… he would become the first black to play in the American League on July 5th.
In 1966, Atlanta Braves pitcher Tony Cloninger hit two grand slams and had nine RBI’s against Giants… he was the first National League player to hit two grand slams in the same game.
In 1968, Indians hurler Luis Tiant struck out nineteen Minnesota Twins over ten innings en route to a 1-0 win.
In 1970, California’s Clyde Wright threw a no-hitter against Oakland, winning 4-0.
In 1983, the Texas Rangers scored 12 runs in the 15th inning to beat the A’s in Oakland by the score of 16-4… it is the most runs scored by a team in extra innings in MLB history.
In 1988, Oakland pitcher Gene Nelson stole a base while pinch-running for Don Baylor in an extra-inning game against Toronto… he became the first American League pitcher to steal a base since Blue Moon Odom in 1973.
In 1993, Dodgers great Don Drysdale passed away.
