In The Silo: Buchholz, PawSox Prevail; Sea Dogs NESN Appearance Rained Out; Salem Sox Lose
By Administrator | July 2, 2009
A few hours after Clay Buchholz and Fernando Cabrera learned they were named to the International League All Star team, both pitchers chipped in to lead the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.
Buchholz earned the win, working seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven. Reliever Marcus McBeth pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Cabrera came on to notch his league-leading seventeenth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Buchholz retired the first ten batters of the game, but with one out in the fourth inning he ran into some bad luck. Suddenly, the Scranton grounders started finding holes. A ground-ball single to left. A ground ball single up the middle. Another ground ball single to left. A well-hit double and a fielder’s choice later and a 1-0 PawSox lead had turned into a 3-1 Yankees advantage.
LF Paul McAnulty had given the Sox the lead with a solo home run in the first inning… he then scored on a ground ball by RF Bubba Bell in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to one run.
In the sixth inning, with runners at the corners, Bell delivered the critical blow of the ballgame, a run-scoring double that tied the game and sent the lead run around to third base… C Dusty Brown drove home the eventual game-winning run with a ground out.
With the win, the PawSox improved to 42-36 and moved to within 2 1/2 games of the division lead.
The series and homestand concludes tomorrow night at 6:15 PM. Lefty Kris Johnson (3-7) faces Josh Towers (2-5). The game will be broadcast on WHJJ-Providence (920 AM)… scroll down, find the link for the PawSox, and click

Salem Red Sox starter casey Kelly, who was recently selected to pitch in the Futures Game next weekend in St Louis as part of the MLB All-Star Game festivities, suffered his roughest start of the season tonight in Myrtle Beach, SC, as the Pelicans pounded the Sox, 8-1.
Myrtle Beach LF Cody Johnson had a pair of hits, including his 21st homer of the 2009 season — a grand slam — to pace the Pels attack.
The Red Sox offense managed just four hits as the club fell to 6-2 in the half. The only run came courtesy of a solo home run by RF Jason Place in the seventh inning.
After Pels southpaw Jose Ortegano pitched the first two innings (he was limited to two innings due to a recent stint on the DL), RHP Jacob Thompson went the rest of the way and earned the win… he allowed one run on three hits over seven innings.
The Pelicans scored early and often off Kelly. They plated two runs — on four extra-base hits — over the first two innings. In the third, Kelly walked three batters and gave up an rbi-single before Johnson blasted his grand slam… suddenly a 3-0 game was a 7-0 game.
Sox RHP Jose Capellan pitched well in relief, allowing just one run on three hits over three innings of work.
The Sox will send Bryan Price to the hill against Eric Cordier tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. The game will be broadcast on WFIR (960 AM)… scroll down, find the link for the Salem Red Sox, then click
