Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury each hit solo home runs and southpaw Jon Lester held the Seattle Mariners to one earned run over 6 2/3 innings as the Red Sox avoided a sweep, 8-4.

Pedroia and Ortiz hit their home runs in the first inning as the Sox jumped out to a 2-zip lead.

Lester struggled throughout the game, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks in his outing. He allowed base hits in each of the first three innings before finally surrendering three runs in the top of the fourth inning… all of the runs were unearned. The M’s started the inning with two singles… a couple of strikeouts and a grounder should have ended the inning, but Pedroia dropped a throw from Youkilis on the grounder to prolong the inning. Shortstop Ronny Cedeno lined a bases-clearing double into the right field corner to give Seattle a 3-2 lead.

Seattle added another run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by LF Ryan Langerhans.

The Sox cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning on Ellsbury’s home run, then added five runs in the seventh inning to put the game away… Ortiz had an rbi-single, Ellsbury drew a bases-loaded walk, 1B Mark Kotsay lined a two-run single into right field, and Sean White wild-pitched a run home.

Justin Masterson earned the win with a brilliant outing in relief of Lester… he pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings of relief for the win. He struck out three of the four batters he faced.

Hideki Okajima pitched a perfect ninth inning to close the game.

Seattle’s Brandon Morrow allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, with seven strikeouts, in six innings.
