Breaking News: Varitek Exercises Option
By Administrator | November 11, 2009
As has been anticipated, Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek has exercised the player option on his contract, thus he will return to the Red Sox in 2010 — for a salary of $3 million.
On Monday, the Red Sox exercised the $7.1 million option on C/1B Victor Martinez’ contract while they simultaneously declined the team option ($5 million) for Varitek. In doing so, the ballclub made it clear that Varitek would return to the team as the backup catcher if he chose to exercise his option.
‘Tek had until midnight tonight to make his decision.
It seemed a foregone conclusion that the team’s captain would pick up the option on his contract. He is coming off his least productive season, having hit just .209, with 14 HR with 53 RBI. With numbers like that, no team was going to hand him their starting job… and no one was going to pay him more than $3 million to act as a backup.
So it seemed a fait accompli that he would return to Boston…
