Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez finished second in the MVP balloting when two writers decided to leave him off their ballot, stating that pitchers should not be the league MVP despite explicit instructions accompanying the voting process that pitchers are to be considered.

The writers, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis’s Star-Tribune and George King of the New York Post, said they could not justify giving the award to a pitcher who participates every fifth day.

Texas Rangers C Ivan Rodriguez won the AL MVP Award.
