In 1960, James ‘Mickey’ Vernon was named manager of the new Senators for the team’s inaugural season… during his three year tenure with club, he went on to compile a 135-227 record.
In 1968, Yankees pitcher Stan Bahnsen (17-12, 2.05) was voted the American League’s Rookie of the Year.
In 1975, Reds 2B Joe Morgan (.327, 17 HR, 94 RBI) was overwhelming selected as the National League MVP.
In 1979, former Angels pitcher Nolan Ryan became the first free agent to sign a million dollars per year contract with a new team after signing a deal with the Houston Astros.
In 1986, Phillies’ third baseman Mike Schmidt (.290, 37,119) joined Roy Campanella and Stan Musial as only the third player in history to win the NL MVP Award on three occasions.
In 1996, free-agent Albert Belle signed a record five-year, $55 million deal with the White Sox making the left fielder the first $10 million a year player.
In 2001, Giants’ left fielder Barry Bonds (.328, 137, 73) won the Most Valuable Player Award for an unprecedented fourth time (1990, 92-93 with the Pirates).
In 2007, Alex Rodriguez (.314, 54, 156) won his third American League Most Valuable Player Award, the second as an Yankee (2005).
