35-year-old Frank Malzone was given his unconditional release by the Red Sox after nine seasons with the ballclub.
GM Dick O’Connell told reporters the seven-time all-star was released in order to give him a chance to catch on with another team. Malzone eventually signed with the California Angels, but hit only .206 in 155 ABs.
As Red Sox fans know, Malzone came back to work for the Sox organization after his playing days were over.
