Oakland’s Bailey, Florida’s Coghlan Earn Distinction As League’s Best Rookies

By Administrator | November 17, 2009

Oakland A’s closer Andrew Bailey and Flroida Marlins LF Chris Coghlan have been named Rookie of the Year in their respective leagues.

Bailey, 25, went 6-3, 1.84, with 26 saves. He allowed only 47 hits in 83 1/3 innings pitched (a .167 opponents batting average) while striking out 91 and walking 24 batters.

He received 13 of the 28 first-place votes and finished with 88 points. Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus was the runner-up with 65 points… Detroit Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello finished with 64 points.

He is the eighth A’s player to win the award (tying the New York Yankees for most in the AL) and the third Oakland player in six years so honored [Huston Street (2005) and Bobby Crosby (2004)].

Coghlan won the National League Rookie of the Year award despite having spent the first two months of the season in the minor leagues (Triple-A New Orleans) — as a second baseman.

He was asked to try left field… he played just one minor league game there and then was promoted to the major leagues.

He batted .321, with 9 HR, 47 RBI and 84 Runs Scored in only 128 games. He led NL rookies in BA, hits (162), runs, total bases (232) and on-base percentage (.390).

He received 17 of 32 first-place votes and accumulated a total of 105 points. He edged Philadelphia pitcher J.A. Happ, who got ten first-place votes and 94 points. Atlanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson (my pick for NL ROY) received two first-place votes and had a total of 37 points.

He is the third Florida player to win the award [Hanley Ramirez (2006) and Dontrelle Willis (2003)].
