Kottaras Waived, Claimed By Milwaukee

By Administrator | November 18, 2009

Catcher George Kottaras was placed on waivers by the Red Sox yesterday. Less than a day later he had a new employer… this afternoon, the Milwaukee Brewers claimed the left-handed hitting catcher.

Kottaras, 26, essentially made the Red Sox by default — they needed someone who could absolve Jason Varitek of the responsibility for catching knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. But his performance on the field left quite a bit to be desired — he batted just .237, with 1 HR and 10 RBI in 45 games.

Kottaras had been with the Red Sox organization since September 5, 2006, when he was acquired from the Padres to complete a trade for LHP David Wells.

Saw this coming…with Tek grabbing onto the final act of his career and exercising his option for 1020 there is no need for Kottaras. With Tek catching every 3rd or 4th day and V-Mart doing the majority of the catching, that left Kpttaras as the odd man out.
