A-Gon Gone… Bound For North Of The Border

By Administrator | November 26, 2009

Shortstop Alex Gonzalez has decided not to wait any longer while the Red Sox try to make up their mind… he has reportedly signed a one-year, $2.75 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, with a team option for 2011 ($2.5 MM).

Gonzalez came to the Red Sox in a trade after starting the 2009 season with the Cincinnati Reds… although he is known primarily as a defensive whiz, he managed to hit .284 in 68 games after arriving in Boston.

Earlier this off-season, the Red Sox declined a $6 million team option it held on his services for 2010… yet both the ballclub and the player expressed interest in having him return to the team. But the Red Sox were determined to explore other “better” options in free agency and via trade, leaving Gonzalez in limbo.

At some point, Gonzalez had to make certain he would have a job in 2010. He could no longer hope that the Red Sox would ’settle’ for him.

With the departure of incumbent Marco Scutaro through free agency, the Blue Jays found themselves without a shortstop for next season… so this signing makes sense for both the player and the team.
