In 1953, the Senators traded Jackie Jensen to the Red Sox for southpaw Maury McDermott and outfielder Tom Umphlett… Jensen would win the AL Most Valuable Player award playing for the Sox in 1958.

In 1954, the Yankees and Orioles finalized the largest trade in major league history as 17 players, including Don Larsen, Gene Woodling and Bob Turley changed teams… the first phase of the trade began November 18th and concluded on this day after the major league draft.

In 1956, Reds outfielder Frank Robinson was selected the National League Rookie of the Year in a unanimous vote… White Sox shortstop Luis Aparicio was selected as the American League Rookie of the Year, beating out Indian Rocky Colavito and Oriole Tito Francona.

In 1961, Red Sox pitcher Don Schwall was selected as the American League Rookie of the Year… the 25-year old right-hander, who managed to get on the All-Star team despite making his big league debut five weeks into the season, compiled a 15-7 record for a team which finished ten games under .500.

In 1964, the Houston Colt 45’s became the Astros… the name change was necessitated due to a dispute with the Colt firearm company and the team’s location to NASA.

In 1967, Pacific Northwest Sports, Inc. was awarded one of the two AL expansion franchise… the team would play in Seattle.

In 1998, due the acquisition of all-star backstop Mike Piazza, the Mets dealt fan favorite Todd Hundley to the Dodgers for outfielder Roger Cedeno and catcher Charles Johnson… they then flipped Johnson to Baltimore to obtain closer Armando Benitez.

In 2005, the Red Sox petitioned a judge to keep the ball used to record the last out of 2004 World Series making the team World Champs for the first time in 86 years… former 1B Doug Mientkiewicz, who caught the ball from closer Keith Foulke to end the World Series, loaned it to the Red Sox but continued to claim ownership of the ball.
