Wagner Signs One-Year Contract With Atlanta Braves
By Administrator | December 2, 2009
Billy Wagner wasn’t free for very long… and he’ll command a pretty penny for his services in 2010.
Less than one day after being offered salary arbitration by the Red Sox, Wagner declined the club’s offer of salary arbitration and instead signed a one-year, $6.75 MM contract with the Atlanta Braves. The deal includes a vesting option for 2011 ($6.5 MM) with a $250,000 buyout… the option becomes guaranteed if the southpaw finishes 50 games for the Braves in 2010.
Wagner, 38, posted an excellent 1.98 ERA in 13 appearances after being acquired by the Red Sox at the trade deadline in exchange for 1B/OF Chris Carter and 1B Eddie Lora.
Since Atlanta finished with one of the fifteen best records in baseball in ‘09, the Red Sox are due to receive the Braves’ first-round pick next June (#20th overall), plus a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds… the pick could drop to a second rounder if the Braves sign a higher-ranking Type A free agent.
The picks received for losing Wagner would offset the loss of any picks the club would forfeit if it were to sign a Type A free agent like SS Marco Scutaro (TOR) or fireballer Rafael Soriano (ATL).
