This Day In Baseball History: December 7th

In 1939, Lou Gehrig was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame… the five-year waiting rule has been waived after the ‘Iron Horse’ was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Also in 1939, at the urging of owner Clark Griffith, American League owners enacted a rule prohibiting the league’s pennant winner from buying, selling or trading players during the following season… the decision had the desired effect — the Yankees finished in third place in 1940.
In 1973, the SF Giants sold future Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal to the Boston Red Sox… the high-leg-kicking, right-handed Dominican will post a 5-1 record for Boston.
In 1973, the KC Royals traded outfielder Lou Piniella and pitcher Ken Wright to the Yankees for veteran pitcher Lindy McDaniel.
In 1995, the Seattle Mariners 1B Tino Martinez, relief pitcher Jeff Nelson and a minor leaguer to the NY Yankees in exchange for pitcher Sterling Hitchcock and infielder Russell Davis.
In 2001, in a rare deal between the cross-town rivals, the NY Yankees traded OF/DH David Justice (.241, 18, 51) to the NY Mets for third baseman Robin Ventura (.237, 21, 61).
In 2004, after turning down a four-year, $60 million extension from the Red Sox during the previous winter — which led to his trade to the Chicago Cubs during the summer of 2004 — shortstop Nomar Garciaparra settleed for a one-year deal with the Cubs for $8 million.
In 2005, the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired all-star catcher Johnny Estrada (.261, 4, 39) from the Atlanta Braves for a pair of right-handed relievers, Lance Cormier (7-3, 5.11) and Oscar Villarreal (2-0, 5.27). The deal, the first for new general manager Josh Byrnes, filled the D-Backs need for a starting catcher and cleared the way for Atlanta to give rookie Brian McCann more playing time.
